The Terriers make the trip to the North-East this Sunday, as they face leaders Newcastle United W.F.C in their antepenultimate league fixture of the season, with a point at the least vital if Glen Preston’s side hope to be playing National League football next campaign.
Town head to Kingston Park off the back of a defeat to promotion candidates Nottingham Forest, with goals courtesy of Jess Thomas and Sophie Domingo enough to earn the Reds a 2-0 victory despite a resilient defensive display, handing Huddersfield a third successive defeat in the process.
Coach Preston was not discouraged in his post-match thoughts however, looking ahead to the fixture against the Magpies, saying: “We’re so close to keeping the top sides to a clean sheet, I think what we have to do is take confidence from the last three or four performances.
“Forest beat Newcastle, so if there is a side to compare to, today we could’ve kept a clean sheet if we’d have held out just that little bit more.
“With players coming back from injury, who’s to say we might be able to go one better.”
Becky Langley’s Newcastle side currently sit 10 points clear at the top of the National league Premier Division North table, with a victory against Town enough to see them crowned champions in front of an expected heavy attendance.
The Terriers will be hoping to put a delay on the celebrations however, with the squad five points from safety and under a serious threat of the drop, with two crucial upcoming fixtures post-Newcastle against fellow relegation candidates Stourbridge Women and Fylde Ladies determining the fate of their football in the upcoming season.
Despite a tough upcoming test, the positive signs of encouragement from the manager will no doubt play in the favour of the squad, with a repeat in strong defensive performances placing an upset against the odds at the toon in the realms of possibility for this Huddersfield side.
