Town Women look to pick up points on the road.
Matchday Five is upon us and this Sunday 17th September, Huddersfield Town Women will be travelling down to the Midlands to face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in a 2pm kick off.
Glen Preston’s side will be looking to pick up maximum points on the road following a relatively poor start to the 2023/24 FAWNL campaign. Currently Huddersfield sit 10th in the table picking up one win. Town Women came narrowly close in their game against Halifax however were defeated by a last-gasp winner meanwhile last week the league leaders, Burnley did enough to take all three points home.
Our Upcoming Opponents
Managed by Siobhan Hodgetts following this departure of Jenny Sugarman, ‘The Baggies’ finished last season in eighth place concluding the campaign with 25 points. This season they have started relatively the same as Huddersfield, only picking up one win. This victory came against Stoke City in the opening fixture of the season where ‘The Baggies’ were 3-1 winners at home.
West Brom typically play their home games at Keys Park, Hednesford however in March 2022 they made their historical debut at The Hawthorns watched by over 1,800 supporters. On Sunday 17th September they will have the opportunity to break this record when they welcome Town Women to The Hawthorns.
Last year’s encounters with West Brom saw the Terriers victorious in September 2022 with a 3-1 win at the Stafflex arena. Meanwhile, in the return fixture, the points were shared following a 1-1 draw in February 2023.
The League Landscape
The start of the FAWNL season overall is showcasing the increased competition between all the sides fighting at both ends of the table. Five sides still remain unbeaten in the league, with only Nottingham Forest (placed 2nd) having a 100% record still intact.
Burnley have gained an early lead sitting in the FA Championship promotion place on 10pts. Nottingham Forest sit 2nd on 9pts but have a game in hand. Then perhaps the early surprise team to be up there is Liverpool Feds who have picked up 9pts from their opening four games – they sit third in the FAWNL.
At the other end, AFC Fylde, Town Women’s first opponents this season, sit pointless at the bottom of the table. The other relegation place is held by newly promoted side Stourbridge who have only picked up 1pt so far this season. Huddersfield Town, West Brom, Stoke City and Derby County sit above with 3pts.
